A Conversation with the Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama is currently in Melbourne and today I attend a public talk called A Conversation with His Holiness on happiness, life and living. My friends and I booked tickets back in January, so I was quite excited about the day finally arriving. Afterwards we went for a coffee and talked about it for a couple of hours. Tonight we have talked online about his response to the question, “Where did the universe begin?”

He is a true leader and humanitarian, and his vision and optimism transcends religion. It was everything that I had hoped for. He talked for over an hour and then answered questions from the floor.

There was gentle humour, warmth and a clear focus to deliver messages on issues such as, economic development, disarmament and the disengagement of youth.

Here as some of the messages that will stay with me.

  • We need to develop a set of secular moral based ethics to be taught to children around the world during their education, this will ensure peace in the 21st century.
  • You do not need religion, just kindness and compassion.
  • Give your children all the affection you can. They are our future. Raise them with compassion and teach them kindness through dialogue.
